What Is LASIK?
LASIK is refractive eye surgery that corrects nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism—all of which are often caused by a focusing errors. Lasik corrects these issues by changing the shape of the cornea. As an example, a cornea may be too steep and cause nearsightedness. If the cornea is too flat causes farsightedness.
To reshape the cornea, a LASIK surgeon creates a protective flap of tissue in the outer layer of cornea and uses a laser to remove microscopic cells in the layer beneath. After just a few minutes, the surgeon puts the flap back in place, which acts like a bandage as the patient’s eyes heal. In the months following LASIK eye surgery, the patient sees with improved vision.
General LASIK Requirements:
– You must be at least 18-years-old
– You must not have had any significant change in your vision for at least one year
– Chronic eye disorders such as glaucoma must first be stabilized
– Your prescription can be no more than 14 diopters of myopia or within 6 diopters of hyperopia or astigmatism
– You must not be pregnant or nursing
– Any chronic illness or disease such as arthritis must be stabilized
