ReLEx SMILE: The Next Generation of Refractive Surgery

Yaldo Eye Center performs one of the newer procedures in Refractive Surgery, ReLEx SMILE. It’s a technique where a Femtosecond laser is used to correct Myopia by cutting a “lenticule” or a very thin circle, depending on the prescription, of tissue within the center of the cornea without creating a flap in the cornea. smile_imageA simplified analogy would be to engrave an artistic figure of any kind with the laser, inside of a block of glass, without going inside the glass.

In SMILE however, the thin Lenticule is removed through a small side incision 3-4 mm wide. The technique has a number of advantages over LASIK. Since no flap is created, the mechanical strength of the cornea is not weakened as with LASIK. Another potential advantage, is with dryness, because you are not cutting a flap which negatively affects the sensory neurons that produce tears. With SMILE however, the vision takes longer to recover, and it takes a few extra days for the “WOW” factor. The technique is currently under investigation and not approved yet by the FDA.

Visian ICL (Implantable Contact Lens)

If you want better vision than what LASIK offers, a solution that is more permanent, the Implantable Contact Lens is the answer. The eye surgeons at Yaldo Eye Center use the new Visian ICL to give vision correction that is sharper, clearer and more vivid, with both greater depth and dimension.
