An ophthalmologist is an eye M.D. who specializes in vision care. As a medical doctor, they have completed college and at least eight years of additional training. They are licensed to practice medicine and surgery, as well as diagnose and treat various eye diseases. Ophthalmologists can also prescribe eyeglasses and contact lenses. Outside of work, they may be involved in scientific research.

An optician is a trained technician who specializes in designing and fitting lenses and frames for eyeglasses and contact lenses. An optometrist or ophthalmologist will provide the optician the specific prescription. Opticians are not permitted to perform eye exams, write prescriptions or diagnose eye diseases.

An optometrist obtains a doctor of optometry (OD) degree after completing three or more years of college, followed by four years of optometry school. They are licensed to perform eye exams, prescribe and dispense corrective lenses and detect eye problems, but they are not medical doctors.

Lifestyle Changes That Can Improve The Health Of Your Eyes

The health of your eyes depends on many things, like your genes and age. But there are certain habits you can practice to improve the the health of your eyes! In this blog post, Yaldo Eye Center suggests some healthy changes to consider in order to increase the health of your eyes, avoid diseases and disorders.

Stop Smoking

One of the best things you can do for your eye health — and your overall health — is to stop smoking. Smokers are more likely to develop inflammation in the eye and dangerous diseases such as age-related macular degeneration than non-smokers. Smoking also increases the risk of developing cataracts. And maybe the most surprising is that smokers are four times as likely to go blind in old age.

Start Exercising

You probably hear this all the time, start exercising! Your eyes are actually affected by how active you are. Regular exercise can help prevent certain eye conditions that are linked to obesity, including glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration. Commit to exercising at least three times per week for 30 minutes.

Wear Sun Protection Year Round

When your eyes are unprotected they are susceptible to the sun’s UV rays even on cloudy days. Too much exposure to the sun can lead to growths on your eyes and cataracts. Wearing eyeglasses with UVA and UVB protection helps prevent overexposure.

Well-Balanced Diet

Make sure you are taking in a healthy amount of fresh produce and lean proteins. Dark green or brightly colored fruits and vegetables contain nutrients like lutein and zeaxanthin, which are critical to eye health. Eating foods high in omega-3 fatty acids (e.g., salmon and walnuts) can also prevent age-related macular degeneration.
