Presbyopic LASIK

Consultations offered at our three convenient locations in Farmington Hills, Garden City and Rochester Hills, MI

Presbyopic LASIK, also known as PresbyLASIK, is a procedure that uses laser energy to reshape the cornea to correct a common eye condition called presbyopia. Presbyopia is a common, age-related condition that reduces your eyes’ ability to focus on objects close to you, leading to blurry, poorly defined near vision. (1) Presbyopic LASIK is highly effective for near vision correction because it features an excimer laser that reshapes the cornea in multiple zones. Unlike monovision LASIK, which enhances far vision, presbyopic LASIK focuses specifically on improving near vision. By improving your eyes’ capabilities, Presbyopic LASIK can create sharper, clearer vision and diminish the condition’s impact on your overall quality of life. (1)

About Presbyopia

Presbyopia affects your eye’s ability to focus on close objects. This condition stems from age-related degeneration in your eye’s natural abilities, as well as internal changes within the crystalline lens. (1) This is the structure that transmits light to the retina, allowing you to sharply focus on certain images. (2)

This condition is highly prevalent worldwide and affects more than 1.8 billion people. It primarily occurs in those between the ages of 40 and 45 years, and it can lead to significant impairments in both your vision and day-to-day productivity. (1)

Benefits of Presbyopic LASIK

Benefits of presbyopic LASIK include:

  • Enhanced Near Vision Clarity: Presbyopic LASIK can improve your overall field of vision by addressing presbyopia, a condition that impacts your eyes’ ability to focus on close objects.
  • Customized Procedures: Dr. Yaldo personalizes each patient’s procedure plan according to their individual concerns and visual acuity to deliver results that meet their unique vision challenges.
  • Minimal Downtime: Presbyopic LASIK offers a shorter recovery time than several other procedures, with most of Dr. Yaldo’s patients returning to their routines after just several days.
  • Lasting Results: The results of presbyopic LASIK are long-lasting, creating improvements that you can experience for years to come.

Candidates

You may be an ideal candidate for presbyopic LASIK if you are interested in addressing presbyopia. Patients for this procedure are typically above the age of 40, as this condition results from the natural aging process. Presbyopic LASIK is an effective way to improve both distance and near vision, as well as visual clarity. However, certain patients may benefit more from monovision LASIK or multifocal implants.

To undergo this procedure, you should possess good general health and a stable prescription. You should also be a nonsmoker or willing to quit using nicotine. Dr. Yaldo will assess your candidacy during your consultation.

Dr. Yaldo does not recommend this procedure if you have any underlying ocular diseases or conditions, as well as local infections. (3) If this applies to you, he still encourages contacting our office to find an appropriate alternative.

Personal Consultation

Presbyopic LASIK is a highly customized procedure, which means that you will need to attend a personal consultation before scheduling your appointment. During this consultation, Dr. Yaldo will meet with you individually to discuss what this treatment consists of, how he performs it, and its benefits and limitations. He will ask about your medical history, visual concerns, and desired results. He will also perform several tests to measure certain factors regarding your eyes. Dr. Yaldo will then use this information to create a treatment plan that is truly unique to you.

If you are ready to schedule this consultation, please submit our online contact form. You may also call (248) 553-9800 to reach our Farmington Hills, Rochester Hills, and Garden City offices.

Preparation

Once you have scheduled your presbyopic LASIK procedure, you will need to make certain preparations. Dr. Yaldo will provide you with a comprehensive set of instructions that may direct you to:

  • Refrain from wearing any contact lenses for at least one to two weeks before your appointment.
  • Have a trusted friend or relative transport you home.
  • Attend your appointment with clean skin that is clear of any makeup or other eye products.

Procedure

Dr. Yaldo performs each presbyopic LASIK procedure in his office on an outpatient basis. When you arrive for your procedure, he will meet with you one last time to reconfirm your treatment plan. He will then cleanse the skin surrounding your eyes before using anesthetizing eyedrops to keep you comfortable.

Dr. Yaldo will then use the LASIK laser to create a flap within your eyes. He will use the laser to meticulously ablate certain parts of the cornea to change its refraction, or the way your eyes bend light. As he does this, he will correct nearsightedness in one eye and address farsightedness in the other eye. (1) Dr. Yaldo will then complete your procedure by placing the flap in its initial position. (3) Once complete, you will rest in his recovery suite for a short period before he releases you to continue resting from the comfort of your own home.

Recovery

After your procedure, you may experience some itchiness, dryness, burning, or general feelings of discomfort. These temporary effects will dissipate on their own shortly, but they are also manageable with prescribed medications and rest.

You may return to most of your daily activities after resting for several days and allowing your eyes to adjust. However, Dr. Yaldo may request that you refrain from engaging in any arduous tasks or wearing contact lenses until he clears you to do so.

Dr. Yaldo will provide you with a full set of recovery instructions during your personal consultation. Aftercare is an essential aspect of each procedure, no matter how subtle or significant your corrections are. By following each guideline, you will be able to quickly return to your routine with the best possible outcomes.

Results

After your presbyopic LASIK procedure, you will experience significant improvements, including an improved ability to see nearby objects with more clarity and depth, reducing your reliance on glasses or contact lenses.

Presbyopic LASIK yields long-lasting results that you can enjoy for several years on end. It is important to understand that every patient may not achieve perfect 20/20 vision after their procedure, but Dr. Yaldo always strives to achieve the clearest vision possible.
