About MonoVision

MonoVision LASIK is a corrective eye treatment that Dr. Yaldo can perform to improve your vision and address presbyopia. Unlike traditional LASIK, which corrects the vision of both eyes for enhanced clarity, this procedure corrects one eye for near vision and the other eye for distance vision.

What is Presbyopia?

Presbyopia is a medical condition that affects more than 80% of adults above the age of 40. It is an age-related decline in the eye’s ability to focus on nearby objects, and while it is considered a natural part of aging, it can severely affect one’s quality of life.

There are several explanations for the onset of this condition, with the primary being the stiffening of the natural lens in your eye, making it more difficult to bend and adapt in shape. This then leads to a decline in the eye’s ability to focus on different objects. Environmental factors such as temperature or humidity can also influence the onset and progression of presbyopia. (2)

Candidates

You may be a suitable candidate for MonoVision LASIK if you have found yourself struggling with presbyopia and you want to reduce your reliance on glasses or contacts.

To undergo MonoVision LASIK, you should be in good general health and possess realistic expectations regarding your results. You should also have stable and healthy corneas. Dr. Yaldo and his team will determine your candidacy during your personal consultation.

Personal Consultation

The first step to improving your vision is attending a personal consultation with Dr. Yaldo. During this meeting, he will not only get to learn more about what brings you in, but also establish a more meaningful relationship with you. He will explain to you what MonoVision LASIK is and how he performs it. He will ask you about your medical history, including any previous treatments you underwent and your current medication intake. He will ask you about your vision concerns and goals. Once he has collected this information, he will perform several different tests to measure the power of your vision, the axial length of the eye, your corneal curvature, and more. Dr. Yaldo will then use this information to finalize your candidacy and create a fully customized solution to improving your optical health and vision.

Preparation

Once you have scheduled your procedure, Dr. Yaldo and his team will provide you with detailed instructions to help you prepare. These include:

  • Trying MonoVision Contacts: Dr. Yaldo may have you wear specialized contacts for a period of time to see if your brain can adapt to the changes in your vision.
  • Avoiding Regular Contacts: Refrain from wearing daily or monthly contact lenses in the weeks leading up to your procedure.
  • Coordinate Transportation: Have a trusted friend or relative drive you home after your procedure, and if needed, stay with you for the first 24 hours of your recovery.
  • Prepare Time Away: Arrange time away from your career, social commitments, and other responsibilities to give yourself time to recover.
  • Adjust Your Personal Routine: Refrain from using harsh skincare products or wearing makeup around your eyes leading up to your procedure.

Procedure

When you arrive for your procedure, a Yaldo Eye Center team member will lead you to a private treatment room where you will meet with Dr. Yaldo one last time. He will answer any remaining questions you may have before cleansing your skin and placing anesthetic eye drops into your eyes to keep you comfortable.

Dr. Yaldo will then use a specialized laser to create a corneal flap. He will lift this flap and make microscopic ablations to carefully reshape the cornea. Dr. Yaldo will alter the power of each eye, with the dominant eye typically being reshaped for better distance vision and the non-dominant eye being reshaped for better near vision. With these adjustments complete, he will place the corneal flap in its original position.

Recovery

Dr. Yaldo performs each MonoVision LASIK procedure on an outpatient basis, which means that he will release you from his care on the same day he corrects your vision. Throughout your initial healing phase, you may experience some sensitivity or dryness. These effects will dissipate with time, but Dr. Yaldo will provide you with medicated eye drops to help you manage any discomfort.

You will be able to notice your vision improve over the following 24 to 48 hours, but you will need to rest to allow your eyes to heal. After several days, you may return to your career and other responsibilities. However, you will need to continue avoiding any driving, makeup use, or arduous tasks until you have been cleared to return. Dr. Yaldo will also have you return for a follow-up appointment. We ask that you attend this so he may check on the health of your eyes, monitor your developing results, and ensure you are adapting well to the changes.

Dr. Yaldo will provide you with a detailed set of written instructions to guide you through each stage of healing. If any questions arise, our team will be available to help!

Results

You will be able to enjoy the full results of your MonoVision LASIK once you have fully recovered and adjusted to the vision changes of each eye. Once you do, you will be able to enjoy clearer vision as your brain combines the farther and closer pictures from each eye. You may find that your need for glasses or contact lenses has lessened, but you may still need them when performing certain activities, such as reading small print or driving at night.

The results of MonoVision LASIK are permanent, which means you will be able to enjoy your improvements for many years to come. However, it is important to remember that your vision may change over time due to the natural effects of aging.
