Dr. Yaldo is able to provide his patients with the most advanced wavefront, topography guided lasik known as “CATz Custom Topography Guided Lasik.”

“CATz” produces better than 20-20 vision in virtually every case. Another procedure called “SMILE” (small incision lenticule extraction) can also produce remarkable results … but Dr. Yaldo doesn’t recommend it.

The Journal of Refractive Surgery attests to Dr. Yaldo’s conclusion through research that Wavefront/CATz produces better visual acuity than SMILE. More so, Wavefront/CATz is a more versatile procedure offering more precise treatments as well as better outcomes to many more visual issues, such as far-sightedness.

Patients have been asking Dr. Yaldo about “SMILE” and he is informing them of these findings. He has done many thousands of Custom Wavefront procedures. See for yourself how Custom CATz Lasik can greatly enhance the lifestyle of Dr. Yaldo’s patients by eliminating the need for glasses and contacts while also giving them precise vision they’d never imagined was possible.

The many millions of people who have experienced the freedom, convenience and comfort associated with lasik surgery may shake their heads in wonder at some of the remaining myths about this remarkable breakthrough in eye surgery.

Unfortunately, misinformation and sensationaized carry-overs from Lasik’s early days still exist. Dr. Yaldo hears it all, and patiently answers the questions of those who seek Lasik’s life-changing benefits while remaining cautious due to some lingering mythology about it.

Here are some common myths he regularly addresses with potential Lasik candidates:

Myth: Can Lasik cause blindness?
Reality: Lasik has been available for about 25 years, and in the early days when surgeons weren’t experienced and standards hadn’t been set, there were a few cases of things going horribly wrong. But now, especially with sophisticated computerization, all laser Lasik and surgeons with thousands of cases under their belt, this simply doesn’t happen. In fact, Lasik is now viewed as one of the safest procedures in all of medicine!

Myth: Lasik only corrects nearsightedness.
Reality: Not true. But one of the reasons this myth still exists is the self-interest and dishonesty of some people who sell glasses. To recommend surgery to a glasses customer means that we’ll no longer need to buy expensive frames and glasses. Let’s be frank: You shouldn’t ask a non surgeon’s opinion on surgery. Dr. Yaldo has done well in excess of 30,000 Lasik procedures and solves all manner of vision issues from astigmatism, farsightedness and all down the line.

Myth: There is only one type of laser used to treat all patients.
Reality: Not even close. There are a variety of lasers depending on the needs and prescription of each patient. After careful screening, Dr. Yaldo identifies the most appropriate laser for your situation or condition. In fact, for many years, Dr. Yaldo was the only eye surgeon in SE Michigan with the CATz laser, which remains the most advanced in all of ophthalmology and gives most Lasik patients better thsan 20-20, the medical definition of perfect vision.

Myth: Is it true that I can’t have lasik because I had RK many years ago? Or, is it true I’m not a lasik candidate because I’ve already had cataract surgery?
Reality: No and No. Cataract surgery affects the lens wheras Lasik reshapes the cornea. RK is a different type of procedure and Dr. Yaldo has given a multitude of former RK patients stunningly great vision via Lasik.

Myth: If I’m not a Lasik candidate, does it mean that I’m stuck with glasses and contacts forever?
Reality: No way. The Implantable Contact (Collamer) Lens, (acronym: ICL,) is one popular alternative. An ICL is a thin, clear lens surgically implanted into the eye as a long-term solution for short-sightedness (myopia), long-sightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism. If you are between 21 and 45 and nearsighted, you may be a candidate for the Visian ICL. Unlike traditional contact lenses that go on the eye’s surface, the Visian ICL is positioned inside the eye between the iris (the colored part of the eye) and the natural lens, which stays indefinitely. In an emergency, it can also easily be removed from the eye.  ICLs are usually reserved for patients with levels of -4 to -20 myopia.

In summary, there is so much information and so many solutions that modern eye surgery has created that no column or blog can address more than a small portion of it. Also, since each of us has a unique set of eyes, the most imprtant step we can take is to see a proven, experienced eye surgeon. And certainly, no one in SE Michigan has more experiene or solved more vision issues that Dr. Yaldo.

The saying goes, only 2 things are certain in life: Death and taxes.

The 3rd certainty is that by age 45 or 50 you’ll need reading glasses. It’s called Presbyopia, an inability to see things up close. This inescapable fact of life was corrected either with bifocal glasses or separate reading glasses.

With the 2015 FDA approval of the KAMRA Inlay, there is now an alternative to Monovision, a lasik procedure in which one eye is corrected for far vision and the other for near vision. The brain adjusts by blending near and far vision as one. It’s quite effective, and some of our radio personalities like WOMC’s Jim Johnson and WCSX’s Jim O’Brien are vocal advocates of Monovision.
The KAMRA Inlay produces sharp near vision. Before we insert the KAMRA Inlay, we first correct your far vision with state of the art lasik, which provides 20-20 vision or better. We then place the Inlay on the cornea of one eye to provide the near vision element and you are all set. It’s painless and takes just a few minutes.

Working together, the eyes allow you to see at all distances.

The KAMRA inlay is microscopically small and thin, just 3.8 mm in diameter, or barely a 6th of an inch. A total of 8,400 microscopic openings surround the central aperture to allow oxygen and nutrients to flow freely and naturally through the eye.It sits in the first few layers of
the eye known as the cornea. Smaller and thinner than a contact lens, the inlay is a mini-ring with an opening – or pinhole – in the center. This pinhole allows only focused light to enter your eye. Like Monovision, the KAMRA inlay is placed in only one of your eyes, allowing you to see up close while maintaining your distance vision in both eyes.

This short video will further explain it:

It’s a wonderful solution to the unfortunate reality of that ageless reality of the human condition: Presbyopia.

Here are some facts and expectations:

  • Procedure time: about 10 minutes per eye
  • Typical results: significantly clearer vision at all distances without glasses or contact lenses
  • Recovery time: several days to several weeks

The Raindrop Near Vision Inlay, like the KAMRA Inlay also described on our website, has been FDA approved for Presbyopia, or difficulty with near vision.

Presbyopia is the most common eye condition. The symptoms include difficulty seeing near objects, such as newspapers and your cell phone, without blurriness, while your long distance vision remains fine.

If you’re 41-65 years old and reliant on bifocals or reading glasses, the Raindrop is another option to consider among several available at the Yaldo Eye Center to deal with Presbyopia.

The Raindrop Inlay (ReVision Optics) is the first device to change the shape of the cornea to correct vision.

In technical terms, The Raindrop® Near Vision Inlay is a microscopic hydrogel inlay. Its rainbowoptical characteristics are almost identical to the human cornea. The hydrogel material is comprised of nearly 80% water, ensuring effective nutrient diffusion and transfer through the cornea. It is easily placed within the cornea under a LASIK-style flap. When in position, the inlay changes the curvature of the cornea so the front of the eye acts much like a multifocal contact lens.

In other words, it works by re-shaping the surface of the eye to improve reading vision. Patients can return to work the next day as it is a completely walk in and walk out procedure

Call the Yaldo Eye Center at 1-800-398-EYES or fill out and submit the sign up box for a free evaluation. Dr. Yaldo will explain all the Presbyopia solutions that are offered and recommend the best one for you and your unique situation.

Small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) is a relatively new refractive procedure designed to treat a multitude of refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, presbyopia, and astigmatism.

The procedure involves using a femtosecond laser to create a corneal lenticule which is extracted whole through a small incision without the use of an excrimer laser.

It is reported to achieve effects similar to laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) with excellent post-operative outcomes.

More than just sight is measured in terms of visual acuity, vision is the process of deriving meaning from what is seen. It is a complex, learned and developed set of functions that involve a multitude of skills. Research estimates that eighty to eighty five percent of our perception, learning, cognition and activities are mediated through vision.

The ultimate purpose of the visual process is to arrive at an appropriate motor, and/or cognitive response.
